P6 were researching flood prevention in preparation for building their own natural and man-made dams as part of our STEM showcase. Our work was prompted by flooding in the news and we also took inspiration and learnt about the dams that beavers make.
In groups of 4, children collected natural materials from around the school grounds which they then used to construct a mini dam in a plastic tray. Dams were then tested by adding water to the tray on one side of the dam and seeing if the dam retained the water.
This led to discussion about suitable materials and the challenges of making it watertight. After our natural dams we then used the engineering design process to construct artificial dams in the trays.
