What is the value of each leaf? What is the value of the stick? The length of the stick and all leaves together is the same length. Reinforce fractions- equal parts.
Start by asking what could the value of the stick be.How many more of the same length sticks would we need to make a whole?
Then you could continue exploring equivalence using the leaves or stick to the sticks : )
Pupils can see it as the multiples of ten- decimals, e.g. each leaf = 0.1, or each leaf = 0.01 then the stick is 10 tenths therefore 1.0. You could write calculations next to it to visualise and address common misconception, e.g. 0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1 is not 0.10.
Or the stick is a half therefore each leaf is e.g. 1/ 20.
Or if each leaf is 1/ 30 then the stick is a 1/3.
