Description

P3/4 enjoyed a morning in Curriemuir Park where they found out about the Holly King and the magical properties of the holly tree. The class investigated the leaves looking at the prickles and how they corresponded with the height at which they grow:

The holly tree tends to be more prickly around the base. This help protect the tree bark from being eaten which would damage the trees health. As the holly grows the leaves present with fewer prickles as ground based animals such as deer cannot reach. These prickly fortresses are the perfect place for animals such as hedgehogs to hibernate.

The children then used clay to create their own hedgehogs using natural materials and holly berries.
