Primary One used the story of stickman to inspire their lesson on measurement. The class were asked to find sticks of different lengths. They used these to compare with one another using language of measurement. Using sticks sparked lots of problem solving conversations about types of stick, how to measure accurately and if one with a kink in it was longer than one without. We placed our sticks on a white piece of calico to create our stick chart. This stimulated more conversation about where sticks were placed and the best ways of testing/ checking length.
After whole class discussion class used found sticks to create their own stick character using clay and other natural “found” materials. Further discussion about size and thickness of stick continued through their play.
